LE MÉDAILLON D'ORION


During the year 2021, I've been working on my biggest project so far, the soundtracked novel : Le Médaillon d'Orion.
It was a great opportunity to write themes, develop them, and create atmospheres evolving with the mysterious Ariane's journey. My contribution to this soundtrack will be avalaible on all streaming platforms Q1 2023. In the meantime, here's some of the prototypes, demos, and researches I've made :

I currently work with Zero Games Studios on a brand new racing game for Nintendo Switch and PC.
Game design, narrative, and of course music composition and music design are my missions on this great project ! Waiting for 2024, here's a proto track :

Sound Creation
All the sounds just below have been made from wood boxes, coins, drills, sticks, voices, digital synths, paper, pencils, water, etc...
I recorded all my foleys with a Shure SM7B and an AT2050. I processed the sounds "in the box" (Studio One), using tricks I discovered over the years and very useful plugins (Waves, iZotope's, Fabfilter's, Valhalla DSP's, and more...)

I created all the sounds here with digital synths, VST Instruments and Samples Libraries.
It has been the occasion for me to discover this incredible synth called Spire, by Reveal Sound, which I use very often now.
If Returnal (PS5) would have been already released when I was working on this, it definitely would have been my main inspiration.

MOCKUP DESIGN
A mockup (in music composition) is about re-creating the composition you made or asked for, with high end music production tools, directly set on the video file (if you have one). It allows you to hear something approaching the final result you'll get, and to make all the adjustments it could need to be pefect.
It's very useful (even necessary), to do mockups. It's the best way to save money and ensure to the orchestra great recording sessions. Because you know what you're supposed to get, and the all team too.
NOTE : When I'm hired for a composition project, mockups are included and are part of my process. I often say : "We have the chance to hear what we are working on ! It has not been always like this..."

BIOGRAPHY
Paul-Alexandre (P.A.D) DOURNEL, is a French composer and sound designer, who was born in Paris on June 3, 1996. At a very young age, music offered him a gift he could not ignore : rock and country music. As told by his mother, a pianist and choir artist at the Opera National de Paris, he used up several Aerosmtih and Alan Jackson tapes at the age of one and a half, mesmerized by what he saw and heard. A devouring obsession for electric guitar was born, and has only grown until today.
Despite an infructuous passage through the Hauts-de-Seine choir school, and classical guitar lessons, things would unfold in a slightly more Rock n' Roll way.
At the age of 11, P.A.D gets his first electric guitar, and embarks on an ongoing musical journey. For years, the repertoire of Dream Theater, Stephan Forte, Steve Vai, or Symphony X was at the heart of his instrumental and musical education.
The Computer Music arrived very early in his story, giving birth to an essential idea: "I can compose, choose the instrument, and hear the result...".
Metal music and band life kept him busy for a few more years, giving him the opportunity to try himself at self-production and ambitious composing, all materialized by a 55min concept album entitled "Stellogénèse".
Things shifted after this - also quite infructuous - experience, when audiovisual scores and soundtracks became central for him. His personal work was already increasingly more orchestral, but it was not until 2018 that it became the heart of his activity, leading to his first contract (Necropalace).
Today, after composing a few OSTs and working 3 years for the 3M subscribers YouTube channel "Poisson Fécond" - where he composed music for videos, and directed the voice acting section - P.A.D mostly works with the french video game development studio Zero Games Studios, for which he officiates as Composer and Game Designer, as well as with Régis Mengus, baritone soloist, on a project still kept secret.
